There are three main reasons why a person may require wheelchair support: accidents, medical conditions, and aging. Among these reasons, medical conditions are most common. Some medical conditions in themselves require wheelchair support. People who meet accidents or are aging may develop medical conditions. Hence, they would need wheelchair support in the long run.

Here are some medical conditions that need wheelchair support. This list is definitely not exhaustive but can give you an idea of what kinds of illnesses need wheelchair support.

Neurological conditions

The World Health Organization defines neurological conditions as disorders that affect a person’s brain, spinal cord, and the nervous system. These disorders not only affect the brain but muscle movement as well. Neurological conditions can either be progressive or non-progressive. Progressive conditions cause further health degeneration, while non-progressive disorders do not.

Cerebral Palsy

Cerebral Palsy occurs when a child’s brain suffers from injury or malformation during development. It may occur during pregnancy, infant delivery, or shortly after birth. This condition negatively affects a child’s basic and important development skills, including talking, crawling, and walking. A child with cerebral palsy who cannot walk yet would require wheelchair support. However, treatment and therapy are possible for cerebral palsy patients as it is a non-progressive condition.

Motor Neurone Disease

Motor Neurone Disease is a condition that affects the brain, spinal cord, and nervous system. It leads to muscle wasting and paralysis. This condition affects all important motor skills, including eating, drinking, and walking. It also affects a person’s speech, and even worse, breathing. Motor Neurone Disease is hereditary and may occur in people above 40 years old as well. People with a history of head trauma, such as soldiers and football players, are also prone to developing this condition.

The five types of Motor Neurone Disease are Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis, Primary Lateral Sclerosis, Progressive Bulbar Palsy, Progressive Muscular Atrophy and Spinal Muscular Atrophy. These diseases require wheelchair support as they are progressive and involve a lot of muscular degeneration.

Muscular Dystrophy

Muscular dystrophy is a condition that causes the muscles to weaken. It occurs when mutations in the X chromosomes prevent the body from producing dystrophin. Dystrophin is an essential protein for muscle development. Patients with muscular dystrophy strictly require wheelchair support as this condition is progressive and eventually renders them immobile.

Obesity

Obesity refers to the abnormal or excessive accumulation of fat in a person’s body. Severe cases of obesity render patients immobile. Prevention is possible, and treatment is available for obese patients. Exercise, dietary adjustments, and lifestyle changes are just some of the treatments for milder cases of obesity. However, patients suffering from severe obesity need wheelchair support for them to be mobile. These patients need bariatric surgery so that they can eventually walk and do exercises.
